THE SOUTH AFRICAN TYRE RECYCLING PROCESS COMPANY

Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism has published the 'Waste Tyre Regulation' for public comment!

The tyre industry is initiating a waste (scrap) tyre collection process to make the waste tyres available to
private enterprises for recycling purposes. To this end they have formed a Section 21 Company
(association not for gain) the South African Tyre Recycling process Company (SATRP Co) to manage the
process on the industry's behalf. The SATRP Co does not plan to be involved in the actual recycling process
which is to be the role of private enterprise.
The tyre industry in SA consists of the manufacturers, importers, dealers, retreaders, recyclers and consumers.

Industry is endeavouring to solve the environmental problem of tyres being burnt and waste (scrap) tyres
being fitted to vehicles.
The funding of the process will be through an “Environmental levy” on
each new tyre sold. The fee will be initiated
by the tyre Suppliers, (manufacturers, importers and retreaders), and
be passed onto the consumer through the tyre dealer.

Goodyear, Bridgestone, Continental and Dunlop.
Importers: Yokohama, Michelin and Pirelli,
Retreaders: Maxiprest and Trentyre.
Membership will be expanded in future.

Representatives of the Tyre Dealer and Fitment Association (TDAFA) and NUMSA also serve as Board Members

The effect of Waste Tyre on the environment

bullet

Illegal Burning to recover steel wire

Tyres are being burnt by the Informal sector to recover the steel content, for which  they only receive ±20 cents per tyre.  This produces major pollution of the air in SA.

bullet

Dumped in the veldt.

Waste tyres dumped in the veldt also have harmful health implications: - creating ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes, rodents and other insects.

bullet

Landfill sites not accepting tyres.

Landfill sites are filling up at an alarming rate and they either no longer accept tyres or charge a fee of up to R15 per tyre.

bullet

Increased road accidents due to illegal tyres.

Waste tyres sold as second hand tyres by unqualified people create unsafe vehicles on our roads. Road accident statistics show that up to 53% of vehicle component failures are tyre related.

Administration

The SATRP Company undertakes to administer a sustainable collection process of waste tyres in SA and make them available to waste tyre users.
A “compulsory charge” will be instituted by the tyre Manufacturers, Importers and Retreaders to cover the costs of the tyre collection process.

Only accredited SATRP collectors will get remunerated for their services
