Welcome to SATRP
MEDIA STATEMENT: Issued by Mr. Riaan van Niekerk, Chairperson of the SATRP Company Board
REMOVAL OF SATRP COMPANY COURT APPLICATION FROM THE ROLL
Following upon the lodgement of an Application by the SATRP Company in the South Gauteng High Court, the Acting Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Mr. Collins Chabane, has afforded SATRP Company a time frame within which to re-submit its Integrated Industry Waste Tyre Management Plan (IIWTMP) for approval by 30th April 2012.
The Acting Minister has also withdrawn, by way of a notice in the Government Gazette (Notice No. 58) published in the government Gazette No. 34974 on 26 January 2012, the approval of the REDISA plan which was previously granted.
As a result of such actions, the SATRP Company has agreed to remove its High Court application which was scheduled for hearing on Friday 27 January 2012, from the court roll in Johannesburg.
No tyre producer is therefore under any obligation to subscribe to the REDISA plan or otherwise liable for any penalties as provided for in the Waste Tyre Regulations.
The SATRP Company intends re-submitting its plan to the Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs and will keep subscribers advised of all developments. Our commitment to sustainable job creation is in line with our desire to produce a plan that will be both cost effective and achieve the objectives of the Waste Act.
The SATRP Company thanks its subscribers for their unswerving backing in the past, particularly over the last two months and looks forward to their continued support in the future.
Any tyre producer wanting to subscribe to the SATRP Company Plan can find the registration forms on the website www.rubbersa.com.
26 January 2012.
The SATRP Company initiative was created by leaders in the tyre industry, at the request of Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) , to plan and administrate the waste tyre project. Any tyre producer may become a subscriber to the SATRP Integrated Waste Tyre Management Plan (The Plan). To date over 85% of producers have registered with The Plan as subscribers.
The SATRP Industry Plan provides for collection and disposal of waste tyres originating from the subscribers to the SATRP Industry Plan. The Waste Tyre Regulation calls for all pneumatic waste tyres to be dealt with but allows for various categories of tyres to be phased into the management process over a five year period. The SATRP Industry Plan proposes to deal with passenger and commercial vehicle tyres during the first year of operation. The SATRP Company estimates the mass of these tyres generated at tyre dealers across South Africa, at 95,000 tons annually. Additional tyre categories will be added to the management process annually.
